After coaching his team to a loss in the World Series, Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo now wants to suck his thumb and eat ice cream, away from the glare of public attention.

His team fell to a 5-0 Game 5 defeat on Wednesday night, leaving them in an impossible position 4-1 down in the World Series, and leading to Texas Rangers securing its first ever championship.

‘I want to run away and hide for a few days. I want to go camping and just sit in the tent and suck my thumb and eat ice cream,’ Lovullo said in the aftermath of the heartbreaking loss.

‘Is that the weirdest answer you guys have ever had? And just let it run its course the way it’s supposed to.

‘Hurt when I’m supposed to hurt, cry when I’m supposed to cry, feel good when I’m supposed to feel good.’

Lovullo has been the manager of the Diamondbacks since 2017, with his first season and this one representing his only postseason appearances leading the franchise.

Two years ago, the Diamondbacks finished with a 52-110 record. The team’s front office has stuck by him despite that low point.

Arizona improved this season and needed a pair of comeback victories to get out of the Wild Card round against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Diamondbacks were heavy underdogs to both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies in the next two rounds of the playoffs.

Arizona swept the 100-win Dodgers in the NLDS and came back from 2-0 and 3-2 series deficits against the Phillies to win the National League pennant.

That all came to a halt against the Rangers, who took down the Diamondbacks in five games, ending their first World Series appearance in 22 years on a somber note.

‘This is painful,’ Lovullo said. ‘This is just plain painful, and I can’t quite move past that right now.’
