Ayub Bey, better known by his stage name Grand Daddy I.U., was an American rapper who was a part of the Juice Crew hip-hop group in the 1980s. He died on December 13, 2022, at the age of 54.
Grand Daddy I.U. was raised in Hempstead, Long Island, and pushed to start performing by his brother, also known as Kay Cee. He was born in Queens, New York. Biz Markie signed him to the record company Cold Chillin’ Records in 1989 after he made a demo tape and submitted it to him.
He made his recording debut in 1990 with Smooth Assassin, which produced two top-ten songs on the Rap Chart: “Something New” (#11), which featured a sample of “I’m Your Puppet” by James & Bobby Purify, and “Sugar-Free” (#9). He earned a reputation for dressing impeccably tailored, always showing out in public wearing a suit and tie.
